About the Role
Our client, a leading pharmaceutical company dedicated to developing innovative therapies, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Scientist in Medicinal Chemistry to join their esteemed R&D team in Raleigh, North Carolina . This critical role will focus on the design, synthesis, and optimization of novel small molecule drug candidates. The Senior Medicinal Chemist will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams, leveraging their expertise in synthetic organic chemistry and structure-activity relationships (SAR) to drive drug discovery programs forward. We are looking for a creative and results-oriented scientist with a passion for chemistry and a commitment to advancing new medicines. Key Responsibilities
Design and synthesize novel small molecule drug candidates using modern synthetic organic chemistry techniques. Conduct structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies to optimize lead compounds for potency, selectivity, and pharmacokinetic properties. Collaborate closely with biologists, computational chemists, and DMPK scientists to define project goals and strategies. Plan and execute multi-step synthetic sequences, troubleshoot challenging syntheses, and develop scalable routes. Characterize synthesized compounds using analytical techniques such as NMR, LC-MS, and HPLC. Maintain meticulous experimental records and contribute to the preparation of scientific reports, presentations, and patent applications. Stay abreast of the latest advancements in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior chemists. Effectively present research findings to project teams and senior management. Contribute to the strategic direction of drug discovery programs.
Requirements
Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a closely related field. Minimum of 5 years of experience in medicinal chemistry within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry. Demonstrated track record of successfully contributing to drug discovery programs from hit identification to lead optimization. Strong expertise in modern synthetic organic chemistry and a broad knowledge of reaction mechanisms. Proficiency in compound characterization using NMR, LC-MS, and other relevant analytical techniques. Excellent understanding of SAR principles and drug design strategies. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and creatively. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong ability to present complex scientific information clearly. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment. Experience with computational chemistry tools is a plus.
