Student Research Assistant - Degradation Modelling for Hybrid Hydrogen Power Plants

Work from home Full-time role Hiring

The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geotechnologies IEG conducts research at seven locations across Germany in the fields of integrated energy infrastructures, geothermal energy, and sector coupling to support a successful energy transition. Our institution performs applied research, develops innovative technologies for public and industrial clients, and transfers research results into market-ready products, processes, and solutions. Within the project Reference Power Plant Lusatia (RefLau), Fraunhofer IEG is developing innovative concepts for future hybrid hydrogen power plants. The project serves as a real-world laboratory for highly flexible renewable energy systems and focuses on sector coupling, hydrogen production, energy storage, and the provision of grid-supporting services required for a resilient energy system. To strengthen our team, we are looking for a Scientific Research Assistant to support research activities in the field of degradation modelling, energy system optimization, and hydrogen technologies. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research while optionally developing a Master’s thesis within the project. The position is based at our Cottbus site with the possibility to work remotely within Germany. Be part of change Development of physics-informed and data-driven degradation models for key components of hybrid hydrogen power plants, including electrolyzers, batteries, fuel cells, and hydrogen storage systems Identification and evaluation of relevant degradation mechanisms through systematic literature reviews and technology assessments Translation of physical degradation processes into mathematical models suitable for energy management systems (EMS) and optimization applications Development of surrogate models and simplified formulations compatible with linear and mixed-integer optimization frameworks Investigation of trade-offs between model accuracy and computational efficiency for real-time operational optimization Comparative assessment of different degradation modelling approaches and their impact on plant performance, operational strategies, and economic outcomes Support in the validation, calibration, and implementation of models using experimental and literature-based data Contribution to scientific publications, project reports, and conference presentations What you contribute Enrollment in a Master's programme in Energy Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline Knowledge of electrochemistry, energy storage technologies, or degradation mechanisms in batteries, fuel cells, or electrolyzers Experience in mathematical modelling, simulation, or optimization of technical systems Programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or comparable programming environments Familiarity with optimization frameworks such as Pyomo, Gurobi, or similar tools is advantageous Ability to translate physical processes into robust mathematical formulations Strong analytical skills, scientific curiosity, and a structured approach to problem-solving Excellent English communication skills What we offer Opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in hydrogen technologies, energy storage, and future energy systems Active involvement in an innovative research project addressing key challenges of the energy transition Close collaboration with experienced researchers in an interdisciplinary environment Opportunity to conduct a Master’s thesis within an ongoing Fraunhofer research project Hands-on experience at the interface of electrochemistry, energy systems modelling, and optimization Access to modern research infrastructure and industry-relevant datasets Flexible working hours and the possibility to work remotely within Germany A collaborative and international research environment that encourages innovation and scientific development We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications – regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity.
