Health Science Academic Services & Facilities has an outstanding opportunity for a Scientific Instructional Technician 1 (SIT1) to assist in the support of the education and research missions of UW. Reporting to the Instructional Support Manager of Program Operations, the SIT1 provides program-level support for laboratory courses, biohazardous waste processing, and sterilization of materials for the Health Sciences laboratory spaces. The SIT1 works collaboratively with the Scientific Instructional Technician 2 (SIT2), a Lab Helper, and Student Employees. The SIT1 is primarily accountable for maintaining the cleanliness and supplies of the Health Sciences Teaching Laboratories, providing customer service to those dropping off biowaste and dishwashing, and assisting the SIT2 with the creation of media for coursework. This position collaborates with the Laboratory Helper and SIT2 to complete the day-to-day operations of laboratory services. As part of a multifunctional team the SIT1 will have a thorough understanding of all service areas within Instructional Support. Additionally, this position must be an engaged part of the Health Sciences Academic Services & Facilities department through participation in department wide initiatives and teams.
The SIT1 works in a laboratory and media room environment, utilizing fume hoods, safety enclosures, PH meters, stir plates, autoclaves, high heat ovens, scientific dishwashers, lab water baths, Bunsen burners, and dispensers to perform their duties.
Duties & Responsibilities
Instructional Support Tasks
- Collaborate with student employees and/or Lab Helper who perform weekly and quarterly maintenance of the T-Wing teaching labs to ensure cleanliness and adequate levels of disposable supplies and reagents, restocking as needed.
- Restock paper towels, soap, and first aid kits in the Education Building Human Anatomy teaching spaces, checking rooms on a weekly basis.
- Produce microbiological media for undergraduate and graduate laboratory courses.
- Assist in implementing safe laboratory procedures and practices.
- Main point of contact for customer inquiries via electronic communications (phone, email).
- Communicate departmental and unit procedures and policies to customers, conferring with SIT2 should any questions arise.
- Communicate Environmental Health & Safety rules and regulations to customers.
- Input billing charges, weekly, into finance software (WebTMA) for biowaste drop offs and dishwashing.
- Completes all required one-time and annual safety training
- Collaborate with SIT2 to determine the need for materials, equipment and instruments necessary for assigned course load with instructors. This may include creating counts for plates, slides, tubes, etc.
- Collaborate with SIT2 to request and process chemical and supply purchase requests. Serving as a backup purchaser if the SIT2 is out of office.
- Collaborate with SIT2 to update chemical inventory and dispose of any items that are expired, and communicating chemicals that need replacing, or running low.
- Coordinates with SIT2 for the surplus of chemicals.
- Perform maintenance and repair tasks on laboratory microscopes
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment such as PH meters and auto dispensers
- Perform minor maintenance of laboratory apparatus and instruments
- Report major repairs of scientific equipment (in the teaching labs or Lab Services) to facility services or Scientific Instruments or work with SIT2 and Instructional Support Manager for third party vendor scheduling.
- Read and record instrument data.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of media prep areas.
- Take pride in maintaining high standards in the preparation of Microbiology media. Applies scientific knowledge and technical expertise to regularly produce accurate, thorough, professional work.
- Able to set priorities, effectively time mange and work cooperatively with co-workers in order to have media ready in a timely and consistent manner, usually a week or two in advance of a course session.
- Has a clear understanding and observes all laboratory procedures, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety rules to include utilization of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as needed.
- Perform scientific procedures while maintaining sterile techniques.
- Build and foster customer relationships by assisting Laboratory Helper and Student Employees in providing accurate information and guidance to customers about policies and procedures.
- A Bachelor's degree with major study in a basic or applied science
- Experience preparing microbiology media
- Experience performing minor maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment
- Proficiency in MS Suite products such as Access, SharePoint, Outlook, MS Teams, and Excel
- Successful experience working in a customer services environment
- Skill at communicating with diverse set of students, staff, faculty and the public
- Routine and repetitive work (pouring plates and dispensing tubes of media is common).
- Standing for long periods of time.
- Walking to multiple floors, rooms, and buildings on a daily or weekly basis.
