Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Academic Research Writer to join our dynamic team. This is a remote, work-from-home position, open to candidates based in Chimanimani, Manicaland Province. The Academic Research Writer will play a critical role in articulating Africa AHEAD's research findings, program impacts, and policy recommendations through high-quality written outputs. This individual will be responsible for conducting comprehensive literature reviews, synthesizing complex data, and translating technical information into accessible and compelling academic papers, policy briefs, grant proposals, reports, and case studies. The ideal candidate will possess a strong command of academic writing conventions, excellent analytical abilities, and a deep understanding of development issues pertinent to rural African contexts, particularly in the areas of public health, WASH, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. This role demands meticulous attention to detail, a proactive approach to research, and the ability to work independently to meet deadlines. You will contribute to enhancing Africa AHEAD's visibility and influence within the international development community by producing publications that meet rigorous academic standards and resonate with diverse audiences, including donors, policymakers, and fellow researchers. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with program teams, M&E specialists, and senior leadership to ensure all written materials accurately reflect our organizational mission and achievements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth literature reviews on topics related to public health, WASH, agriculture, and environmental development in rural African contexts.
  • Synthesize complex quantitative and qualitative data from various sources into coherent and compelling narratives.
  • Develop and write high-quality academic papers, journal articles, research reports, and policy briefs for publication.
  • Draft compelling grant proposals, concept notes, and donor reports, adhering to specific guidelines and requirements.
  • Prepare comprehensive case studies and success stories that highlight program impact and lessons learned.
  • Edit and proofread internal and external documents to ensure clarity, accuracy, consistency, and adherence to academic and organizational standards.
  • Collaborate with program managers, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) specialists, and communication teams to gather necessary information and insights.
  • Ensure all written materials are culturally sensitive, contextually relevant, and align with Africa AHEAD's mission and values.
  • Stay updated on current research, trends, and best practices in relevant development sectors. Required Skills
  • Exceptional academic writing and editing skills in English.
  • Proven experience in conducting literature reviews and synthesizing complex information.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet strict deadlines in a remote environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of research methodologies and academic referencing styles (e.g., APA, Chicago).
  • Familiarity with international development issues, particularly in public health, WASH, and community development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in Public Health, Development Studies, Social Sciences, Environmental Studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in academic writing, research, or technical writing, preferably within an NGO or research institution.
  • Experience working with data visualization tools or presenting complex information clearly.
  • Knowledge of local contexts and development challenges in rural Zimbabwe/Africa. Perks & Benefits
